Factors Causing Thickness Factors Causing Thickness

The rapid hydration property of guar gum when dissolved in cold water is the key factor that provided excellent thickening ability. The molecules of galactose and water interact and result in inter-molecular chain. This kind of reaction takes place when the particles are dissolved in aqueous solution therein transform the whole solution to become bulky. If the concentration of endosperm gum increases, the formation of inter-molecular chain also gets enhanced leading to higher rate of viscosity.

More viscosity in low Concentration

More viscosity in low Concentration

The natural polymer present in guar gum allows it to produce highly viscous diffusion however, this happens only when the polymer is added with suitable solvent. The presence of β(1-4) D-mannose and varying amounts of α(1,6) D-galactose side chains remain the strong feature that shows economic stabilizing and thickening property. The mannose to galactose ratio in appropriate proportion makes it easily soluble in water and to become a highly viscous product. Several research analyses have also been made to prove the comparatively higher thickening property of this powder with that of other seed gums.

Scientific Factors influencing Viscosity Parameter

Apart from research studies over mannose to galactose ratio, other factors have also been scientifically proved to highlight the disolving properties of endosperm powder. They are,

  • Concentration of galactomannan in the powder,
  • Concentration of molecular weight of endosperm particles,
  • pH level,
  • Temperature and environmental factors,
  • Co solutes,
  • Particle size, etc

Hydration Kinetics that supports for Scientific Research

Hydration Kinetics that supports for Scientific Research

Scientific research have been conducted to prove the viscous properties of guar gum were found to show the following results,

  • Application of high temperature viscosity measurement to obtain thermal degradation of guar seed endosperm powder proved to have shown degradation at high concentration. In addition, the reversible time based thickening also changes in its property.
  • When applied in lowest concentration, the change in reversible time appears to be absent.
  • The heat and flow of this product also appears to degrade in its property when tested for molecular weight and gel permeation.
  • Minimum 2 hours observation is required to see maximum thickness formed of dissolving and there is a strong link between the size of particles present in the powder and the rate of hydration.
  • Guar endosperm with low molecular weight also appears to show increase in polydispersity at heat degrading condition.
  • When combined with cellulosic and hydrated minerals, it exhibits excellent bonding. A proportionate change takes place if the concentration is increased.
  • Solutions prepared by using gum powder at high temperature this endosperm powder reaches excellent rate of bulkiness. However, at the final stage dissolution done with cold water shows stable results than those that is done at high temperature.
  • The desirable temperature to obtain increased thickness rate is from 25-40 degree C.

Conclusion

Guar gum is known for its excellent viscous property. It provides excellent results of thickening when hydrated at cold water. Though hydrated at high temperature also provided fast results, cold water dispersion shows stable results.

The weighing materials are those that are balanced in drilling fluid to enhance the density or viscosity which in turn supports in heaving shales. The role of sesbania begins here as it is applied as one of the powerful components in the preparation of weighing material along with bentonite and water. In some cases drilling mud preparation require components with alkaline properties to make it more efficient for drilling in oil wells especially and here too sesbania works compatible when combined with alkaline. The liquid phase has to be more viscous so that it can be easily sent to the filter cake and this can be done only using high molecular weight polymers like sesbania gum.

How Sesbania Gum Powder works for Oil Drill?

sesbania-gum-powder-works-for-oil-drill

Sesbania gum powder has been tested to understand its potentiality when applied as a drilling fluid. It has been mainly preferred for drill applications due to higher range of viscosity than guar gum powder. Several researches were conducted to obtain the facts about efficiently making use of gum from sesbania as a drilling fluid in oil drilling with mud compositions. The reasons which initiated researchers to choose this alternative in the place of guar gum include,

  • This gum powder showed better results in terms of viscous property.
  • Gel strength is comparatively lower than guar gum which appears to be the strongest factors that encourage research people to test this product as an important ingredient for making drilling fluid.
  • It was also found through tests that this gum powder do not exhibit degradation even at 85 degree C. This property helps for in depth drilling requirements and subsequent application as drilling mud worldwide.

Gelling Property of Cassia Tora-The Reason for its Uniqueness

Galactomannan present in plant seeds is the key factor that works out effectively when converted to gum powder. Cassia tora contains supreme quality and quantity of galactomannan which works uniquely than the galactomannan of other seed gums. In addition to that, cassia gum with anionic good gum produces considerable effect on the synergy of food grade thus restricts synergistic gelling effect when combines with anionic polymers. Due to this even adding relatively smaller amount of cassia tora gum powder can produce excellent gelling property. As a result of this cassia tora gum powder is considered as a cost effective and reliable source for producing gelling effect when applied in small amount when compared to the need for larger amount of carrageenan and other sources.

Functional Performance of Cassia Tora Gelling Property with Other Gum Powders

Professor Symon M. Mahungu and Mrs Inge Meyland observes that the gelling effect of cassia tora gum powder can be explained in details with more experimental proofs to show how exclusive cassia tora gum remains better option than other seed gum powders when applied to obtain fast and cost effective gelling. They have also framed chart and graphic representation to explain about the gelling property and break strength of cassia tora with other gum powders.

Functional Performance of Cassia Tora Gelling Property with Other Gum Powders

Inner Gel Strength and Break Strength in milk

When combined with other gum powders cassia tora exhibits different amount of gelling capacity. For example,

  • Inner Gel Strength (IGS) and Break Strength (BS) of Cassia Carrageenan in comparison with locust bean gum and other carrageenan gels vary significantly.
  • The galactomannan present in the refined cassia gum powder is unique with that of others such as locust bean or guar gum as it contains comparatively lesser galactose molecules and long mannose chain.
  • The above property of refined cassia gum allows it to produce considerable effect on the synergy of food grade cassia gum when combined with xanthan or carrageenan.
  • When compared to other gum powders xanthan and carrageenan when combined with cassia gum produces considerable effect on the food grade gum powder synergy.
  • Xnathan and carrageenan are anionc food gums which produced synergetic gelling effect due to the presence of higher amount of galactose chains present in cassia tora gum powder.
  • Replacing cassia gum in the place of carrageenan or locust bean galactomannan it is experimentally proved that the amount of hydrocolloid is reduced considerably.

Historical References Available about Cassia Tora

cassia plant

cassia plant 1

LeRoy Holm is his book “World Weeds Natural Histories and Distribution” has provided ample reliable sources about the real species of Cassia Tora. Cassia tora belongs to the Caesalpiniaceae subfamily of the Leguminosae and there are 180 genera in this subfamily. Among them cassia occidentalis and cassia tora directly belongs to cassia genre. The fact behind safety of usage of seed gums from these two types of plants was found after several researches have been proved about the toxicity present in Cassia occidentalis when it was tested with animals. Though seed gum extract is possible in these two varieties, cassia tora proves to show meager or lesser quantity of toxicity.

Why to Be Careful about Gum Extract of C.Occidentalis?

cassia plant 2

Food Grade Cassia Gum

Cassia occidentalis is an annual shrub and there had been several controversies concerning the acceptance of c.occidentalis and cassia tora on equal terms. Carl Linnaeus observed the above two plants as two different species, however; later they were treated as similar. Controversies continued as many scientists took the way which Linnaeus approached and considered both as separate due to the presence of toxicity in higher lever in C.occidentalis. Gum extract obtained from occidentalis is also associated with presence of more impurities.

Selection of Raw Material Cassia Seeds through Careful Examination

Raw Material Cassia Seeds through Careful Examination

Altrafine, one of the pioneers in processing and exporting seed gums provide high quality cassia tora gum powder which is prepared as per the food grade standards. One of the main attempts we make is that we obtain cassia seeds of the safe species based on percentage of splits. In this way, our R and D team manages to obtain cassia tora seeds by thorough examination of seed shape, size and color. Finally, the endosperms of splits obtained from tested cassia tora are processed for obtaining gum powder.

Identical Cassia Species-C.Obtusifolia

Identical Cassia Species

There is one more species called C.obtusifolia which is also one among the leguminosae family and the seeds look identical to that of cassia tora. However, Crawford and Friedman have observed some detectable difference in the chemical composition of these seed varieties. The presence of anthraquinones had been yet another threat to toxicity of cassia gum. At Altrafine we process cassia tora gum powder through several mechanical processes to obtain it as a pure, refined gum extract with meager anthraquinone content.
